The Art and Science of Swimming in God

It is my belief that the anthology that we call the Holy Bible ( literally Sacred Book) is a Great Light to humankind for it is a book of spiritual wisdom and truth.  The New Testament, in particular is a good rule and guide for a life well lived as it teaches much wisdom, love, tolerance and philosophy by means of parable and allegory.

So it is with with Acts 17:28…For we live and move and have our being within the great body of God.  We live in Him.

What does this mean?  Does it mean that we are surrounded by God, that we swim in God as a fish swims in the ocean?

Could it be that we have gotten it wrong for nearly 2,000 years?  Traditional Old Time Christianity teaches that God, Angels, and the Heavenly Host live far above in a place called Heaven or Paradise.  We are weak worms of the dust and of little account but can be redeemed and given eternal life if, and only if, we take the man Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

In my book, the Death of Religion and the Dawn of Spirituality, I call this central idea of Christianity the longest running Magic Show in history.  It is a complete contradiction of Acts 17:28.

God is not an unreachable presence in the Cosmos but is everywhere present, all around us, above us, below us, in us and of us. In fact, we do swim in God as a fish swims in the ocean.  We do not become God as the fish does not become the ocean, but it is the medium in which we have our being and our life.

God is within every cell in our body.  God surrounds us with its presence in the form of our aura.  God lives in our Mind, Heart and Spirit.  In fact, the old New Thought saying: There is no spot where God is not is exactly true.

Understanding that God is the medium in which we exist can free our magnificent power, will and intelligence which is the key to creating exactly the life we want and need.  Life then becomes the Art and Science of Swimming in God.

How good a God Swimmer are you?  Do you allow yourself to despair when outside events don’t go your way (like elections or love affairs or your job)? Do you feel worthless and never seem to fit in anywhere?  These are symptoms of a person needing God swimming lessons!

If you develop the Sacred Senses that you were born with to the point that you can feel the warm balm of the ocean of God caressing your Body, Mind and Spirit every moment of your life, then you are a Master Swimmer in God. In this state of being there is nothing that you cannot do with proper use of the Law.

The Art is in the feeling of the God presence each and every moment, in your waking, sleeping, going and coming.   The Science is in the mastery of the Law; the great creative engine of God that we are licensed to use.  Used properly and with right intent and purpose, the Law never fails.

If there is a failure in your Law Work it is due to what my wife calls: operator error.

We really do live and move and have our being within the great Body of God.  If God is Truly all there is and we are here then we are part and parcel of God.  We really do swim in God as a fish swims in the ocean.

For many years I could not feel God enveloping me as the warm ocean envelops the swimmer. There have been times when my heart was broken, my ego shattered, my self esteem dragging and my life seemed pointless.  After practicing serial monogamy for far too long until Lady Susan graced my life 18 years ago and healed my heart and enriched my mind, there were too, many times when God felt very far away from Dore’.  I was washed up on the shore of despair until my dear wife came into my life.

I am now a swimCSL.ORGmer in the Ocean of God.  I know God surrounds me and is within me and I am learning new lessons each day to become a Master Swimmer in the Ocean of God.  Won’t you join me?

Come on in…..The water’s fine!

The Healing of America Part 3

OMG! The dust is settling from a most unusual and vitriolic Presidential Election Campaign.  I was on the losing side in this one but the will of the people prevailed. The pundits and pollsters emerged with massive quantities of egg on their collective faces as they were so sure that Trump was merely an oddity that could not win.  Donald Trump is our President Elect and now he and all of us must work to heal America; to bind up the wounds, soothe the unreasoning fear and come together as the only identity that really matters…..Americans!

The people have spoken and all those who believe in the principle and practice of Democracy must congratulate our new President, have a drink or two to calm down and move on with out lives seeing the very best outcome of this election as our Truth and The Truth for the America we love.

As Religious Scientists, this is a time to practice what we preach like never before!  I hear some of our ministers expressing gloom and doom and much sadness over the election result.  Better that we should take this energy and use it to see the good, to affirm the good; remembering the old truism that politicians and candidates campaign in poetry and govern in prose.  In other words, many things are said in the heat of the campaign for election that are never heard again once the mantle of office descends on the new President.

Time after time men we thought of as unfit or ludicrous have grown as Presidents,  Perhaps Mr. Trump will become the Harry S Truman of the 21st Century; going from a very ridiculed Vice President who was not even told by FDR that the US had the Atom Bomb; to a place in the first rank of great Presidents for moral courage, wise decisions and his “Give em Hell, Harry” manner.

The people have spoken and if you are a democrat with a small “D” you will accept and wish well the choice of the people.  Sore losers are the bane of democracy and often create “banana republics” in other parts of the world by their refusal accept defeat at the polls.

Healing America will entail the re-birth of the essential consciousness that we are all Americans.   This will mean the end of identity politics and the emphasis on the essential truth that though we may disagree on policies and candidates, we are ONE on the subject of America; the nation we love.  Is America perfect?  Never was, may never be but it is our beloved home and we must work together to make it better each and every day.  Our collective thought has great power to lift us up or drag us down.  Now is the time to elevate not to descend.

The truth is that Republicans need Democrats to remind them of the heart and soul of America which is love, caring and compassion.  Democrats need Republicans to remind them that people thrive when they achieve and aspire, not when they are made dependents of the state.  They also need to remember that the tyranny of the minority is the worst kind of tyranny and that righting a wrong for a few and imposing a wrong on the many creates  another injustice and another grievance.

We need each other and the input of many consciousnesses and ideas.

Lastly we need to banish the concept of “Political Correctness” in America.  It is antithetical to the most cherished right of an American: The peaceful expression of our opinions, thoughts and feelings whether in speech, writing or performance art.

Will some of these opinions or writings offend?  Yes!  There is no Constitutional right protecting one from being offended.  Offense is a choice, not a crime.  In the words of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: “I may disagree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it”.  That is the essence of America, toleration of the abhorrent in the service of liberty.

Political Correctness is a Maoist idea, found in Mao’s “Little Red Book”.  It is how a totalitarian state crushes opposition by shaming those who disagree into silence, often accompanied by years in a labor camp.

As a college student in the 1960’s I was very familiar with the “Little Red Book” having bought one in the Student Store (would you believe it?) just to see what all the excitement was about.  I read in horror Mao’s prescription for the total subjugation of thought, word and deed. It is a prescription for a dead society, devoid of liberty, individualism and joy.   I have been a Republican ever since.

We are all free to choose our friends and associates, to surround ourselves with consciousnesses that uplift and improve our lives.  We are also free to get up and leave if what we read, hear, or speak is not pleasing.

What we do NOT have a right to do is to prevent that expression from being expressed.  Who knows, we just might learn something from beyond the echo of our own opinions.

Law, the Engine of all Creation

As I promised, this week’s blog is about The Law.  Law is God’s operating system of the Universe.  In fact it is similar to the Bios in your computer.  It is the framework and regulator of all life, just as the Bios enables the operating system of your computer to function and the programs to run.

Indeed, nothing is created without the Law.  This may sound strange to many of you who are an adherents of traditional religions such as Christianity, Islam or Judaism.  These faiths believe in a “parent” God who handles every detail of the Universe and our lives.  Like a parent, the God concept of these faiths rewards good behavior with 77 virgins or lands of “milk and honey” and punishes bad; often with horrible and unimaginable torment.  “As God wills it” you will hear these people say.  Great for avoiding responsibility, isn’t it?

To a Religious Scientist this is a child’s Sunday School tale.  Your parents are your parents, God is your Creator and there is a world of difference.  A parent regulates and monitors the child’s behavior and often continues to do so well into adulthood.  A Creator lovingly provides life and all the tools needed to create the life that is desired by its creation.  Intellect, Imagination and Will are the 3 great gifts of God to all sentient beings.

God does not operate by whim or caprice but rather by Law.  There are physical laws such as gravity, motion, and thermodynamics and spiritual laws such as Mind Action, Compensation, Attraction, Correspondence, and Cause and Effect. These Laws may be studied, explained mathematically, and will always work if operated properly.  This is where the “Science” in Religious Science comes in.

The Universe is not a mystery and neither is the Creator.  Both are predictable, practical and operate by Laws that are knowable to anyone willing to take the time and effort to learn them.

How then does the Law perform its job as the engine of Creation?  The grist for it’s mill is thought, yes thought!  We all have them every second that we live but most of us do not know that these very same thoughts are creative. Thoughts are the building blocks of the Universe and the tools that God uses to Create the Cosmos and that you and I use to create our life experiences.  Thought is the most powerful tool in our life toolbox.  If you will learn to control your thoughts, bend them to your will and use them wisely; you truly will become the “Master of your Fate and the Captain of your Soul”.

Just how does the Law act on thought to create something in material form?  Have you ever seen a locksmith use a wax tablet to create an impression of a key so that a copy may be made?  The wax is inert, it will return whatever image is impressed upon it.  It cares not whether the key is for your bicycle or Fort Knox!  Its job is to create keys from impressions.  In our analogy The Law is the wax tablet and the key is your thought.

It has been said many, many times by sages down through the centuries that thoughts are the keys to life.  Zarathustra, Plato, Jesus of Nazareth, Muhammad, the Buddha all have taught that your thoughts make up your life.

You see, when you think of something with belief and emotion you give it power.  If that thought becomes a vital part of your subconscious mind and your thought atmosphere; your mind, using the Law of Mind Action, will create just what you are thinking whether positive or negative.  Remember The Law is the wax tablet, it works for the saint and the sinner, the pauper and the king.  More next week on how to use the Law in your life.

Here are 4 ideas that you may practice to begin to control your thinking and change your life.

  1. speak and think only of what you want in your life, what you are willing to experience.   Most of us argue for what we don’t want, we speak of what we fear, dread and seek to avoid.  When our thought and word is about our fears, everything we seek to remove from our lives the Law having no volition of its own dutifully creates what you have impressed upon it with your thinking, your fear and your worry.
  2. Watch what you say to yourself.  Our self talk is the prime source of grist for the Law’s creative process.  Speak only of things that you want, desire and fancy.
  3. The law operates in forward and reverse, it is totally impartial which is why bad things happen to good people and vice-versa.  You have a license from God to create heaven or hell in your life and both are created by thought and the Law.
  4. Be very clear on what you wish to change or create in your life.  Remember the wax tablet?  It makes the impression that becomes your reality.  Be sure that you want the key to paradise made rather than the key to a jail cell.  Have a crystal clear mental picture of what you would have in your life and be tenacious in believing that it is already done far before it arrives in material form.

Next week we will talk more about how to become a Master of the Law and create the life you have always wanted.  Until then, be well and happy!
